# Update the plugin
URL: /documentation/plugin/update

## Goal [#goal]

Move an installed Strata19 plugin to the newest release and confirm the running session picked it up.

## Before you start [#before-you-start]

Hosts load a plugin from a version-keyed cache. Publishing new code under a version you already have installed ships nothing, so an update only exists when the version number is higher. Each release is tagged `strata19--v<version>` and lists its artifacts and hashes in [`latest.json`](https://strata19.com/plugin/latest.json).

## Steps [#steps]

<Steps>
  <Step>
    ### See what you are running [#see-what-you-are-running]

    Your host lists installed plugins and their versions (`claude plugin list`, `codex plugin list`). Compare that with the `stable.version` in [`latest.json`](https://strata19.com/plugin/latest.json). A session that was started before an update keeps running the old server until it is reloaded.
  </Step>

  <Step>
    ### Update on your host [#update-on-your-host]

    <Tabs items="['Claude Code', 'Codex', 'Claude Desktop', 'Antigravity']">
      <Tab value="Claude Code">
        ```bash
        claude plugin marketplace update strata19
        claude plugin update strata19@strata19
        ```

        Then run `/reload-plugins` in each open session. To update automatically, open `/plugin`, choose **Marketplaces**, select `strata19` and enable auto-update. It is off by default for third-party marketplaces, applies after a random delay of up to ten minutes, and running sessions still need `/reload-plugins`.
      </Tab>

      <Tab value="Codex">
        ```bash
        codex plugin marketplace upgrade strata19
        codex plugin add strata19@strata19
        ```

        Restart Codex afterwards. The command is `upgrade`, not `update`.
      </Tab>

      <Tab value="Claude Desktop">
        Download `strata19.mcpb` from the newest GitHub Release and open it. Extensions installed this way do not update themselves.
      </Tab>

      <Tab value="Antigravity">
        Re-run `node scripts/strata19/host/install-antigravity-plugin.mjs` and restart Antigravity. It has no `--update` flag yet.
      </Tab>
    </Tabs>
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Verify [#verify]

Your host should list the new version, and a response that names your repository should come from a session started after the update. On Claude Code and Codex, compare the installed copy with the release:

```bash
ls ~/.claude/plugins/cache/strata19/strata19/
ls ~/.codex/plugins/cache/*/strata19/
```

## If it doesn't work [#if-it-doesnt-work]

**The marketplace still shows the old version.** Claude Code can keep a stale local clone of the marketplace. Remove it and add it again:

```bash
rm -rf ~/.claude/plugins/marketplaces/strata19
claude plugin marketplace add https://github.com/jordanallen87/praetor.git
```

**The new version is installed but the session still reports the old one.** The running server was started before the update. Run `/reload-plugins` (Claude Code) or restart the host (Codex, Antigravity).

**You need to go back.** A release can be rolled back to any earlier tagged version. Until the marketplace points at that version again, pin it by hand by reinstalling from the tag `strata19--v<version>`. A newer release can change the plugin's local data files, so the release notes say when a rollback also needs a data step.
