## What it does [#what-it-does]

Claim one work item as the calling agent and get back what it must achieve: its title, acceptance lines, and the files it may change. The claim is advisory and per agent; a second agent claiming the same item is told who holds it. Once claimed, writes outside the item's scope are refused by the host hook.

## When to use it [#when-to-use-it]

**Use when:** "take W-12" · "work on this item" · you are one of several agents each given a work item · before editing files for a work item

**Also use when:** at the start of a subagent whose task names a work item or workKey

## When not to use it [#when-not-to-use-it]

you only want to read an item (use strata19.manage\_work\_item get) · you are done and want a verdict (use strata19.verify\_implementation) · the work is not a tracked work item
